The Elder Diggs School 42 of the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is located in a low-income area of the city’s west side. Many of its students come from homes where reading was not encouraged or a part of family life. Beginning in 1997, members of First Congregational Church have made weekly visits to School 42 to read with and to students. The intent is to develop both reading skills and an appreciation for reading. Perhaps even more importantly, the tutors establish bonds with the students that work both to raise esteem in the student and give the tutor a sense of great reward.
Tutors visit the school at several times during the week and more tutors are always needed. This program is done jointly with members of our sister church, Imani Community Church.
